Academy Grad Hameir Wright Shines as Washington Upsets #2 Kansas

Who can’t remember Hameir Wright when he was at Albany Academy. Carrying the Cadets to back to back Federation Championships, being named NYS Gatorade Player of the Year, we knew this kid had potential. This season, the Freshman is kicking it at the University of Washington, a member of the Pac-12. The Pac-12 is not easy, and Wednesday night when they took on #2 Kansas, it was there biggest test yet.

The zone for Washington was working just as planned, making the Jayhawks frustrated from outside. Kansas had a hard time, going 5 for 20 from 3. Mattise Thybulle knocked down 5 3-pointers and totaled 19 points, to hand Kansas their first loss of the season, 74-65.

The pressure from the Huskies was strong in the first half, but the intensity picked up in the second half. The lead was 52-44 with 12:10 left in the game, but then it became a different ball game. Kansas would go on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead with 9 ½ minutes left.

A timeout would refuel the Huskies, stretching their lead again. Hameir Wright’s three gave Washington the lead 69-56, the biggest lead of the game. Hameir Wright would finish with 5 points in 27 minutes of action.

Up next for Washington is #12 Gonzaga, beginning a four game home stand. Keep it close as we follow Hameir Wright and the Washington Huskies.
