Ichabod Crane Defeats Saranac In Region Championship, Advance to States For Second Straight Year

The offense for the Ichabod Crane soccer team is ridiculous. How fast these guys play, and how cleanly they do it is just mesmerizing to watch. Kevin Winglosky, Gio Gomez, Nick Johnston, Logan Groat, and Anthony Carlucci all work together so nicely, and complement each other so nicely, that it’s really a treat to watch them every game.
The Riders game out of the gates ready to run! Saranac likes to keep the ball in the air and have some agressive players up top, but ICC was ready to run and keep the ball on the ground. About 20 minutes into the game Justin Meza placed a ball perfectly into the box for Logan Groat to blast a shot right by Saranac goalie Cameron Duffield. That gave the Riders a 1-0 lead early. 5 minutes later, Kevin Winglosky and Gio Gomez teamed up on a beautifully developed play. Winglosky dribbled down the left side of the field and as four Saranac defenders converged on him, he put on a beautiful spin move and dished it to Gomez who made the most of his opportunity as he drilled it into the back of the net with his left foot. 2-0 ICC. Later in the half, as the announcer was counting down from 10, the Riders had a throw in. Parker Groat tossed it into Nick Gallo who put it in the box and as the announcer said “1” Anthony Carlucci drilled it into the net to give the Riders a 3-0 lead over the Chiefs at the half.
In the second half, both teams were pretty evenly matched, not a ton of action but it was without a doubt Ichabod’s game. Late in the second half Gio Gomez capped off the scoring with a goal to make it 4-0. That would end the scoring for both sides as Ichabod walked away victorious and with the Class B Regional Champions!
The Riders will advance to the NYSPHSAA State tournament next weekend in Middletown, New York. They will face Section VI’s 18-2-0 Lackawanna Steelers in the State Semi-Finals on Saturday, November 11th at 9:15 AM. The other Semi-Final game will be played between Section XI’s 18-0-0 Center Moriches Red Devils, and Section III’s 17-1-0 Westhill Warriors.
