New York is Blue! Villa's Hat Trick Sends The Jersey Boys Home
Sunday was the game of the weekend in the MLS with two hated rivals facing off at Yankee Stadium for game two of the Hudson River Derby. NYCFC won the first meeting back on June 24th where they won 2-0 back in New Jersey so the Red Bull's were looking to even the season series. Yankee Stadium was no strange place for the Red Bulls because in previous meetings against City, they've dominated at Yankee Stadium and NYCFC players and fans wanted to change that on Sunday and they did just that. The Stadium was rocking and city bragging rights were on the line. NYCFC played well as a team, moving the ball to open spaces and executing the crucial long balls that led to many offensive opportunities and lots of cards handed out. Like always NYCFC was led by their captain David Villa where he had his first hat trick in his MLS career and this is the second hat trick in City history.(Frank Lampard against Colorado) On the other side, the Red Bulls Bradley Wright Phillips notched two goals but it wasn't enough because the Red Bulls couldn't stop David Villa. NYCFC would go on to win 3-2. What I took away from this game is that David Villa proved he's the best player in the MLS, NYCFC hasn't lost in back to back games since last April so it proves that this year’s team is very resilient after coming off a loss. (They were coming off an awful loss to Toronto 4-0), and City is catching up in this short historic rivalry. NYCFC are contenders, not pretenders. After this win the Empire State Building will be shining City blue. #NYisBlue
