Yankees Bullpen Blows Game In 9th, Sox Take 5-4 Victory
Bottom of the ninth, 0 outs, the pitch…. Is a ball and the Red Sox win game 1! Yes the Red Sox beat the Yankees on a walk off walk Friday night in Boston. The win pushed the Sox lead in the AL East to 4.5 games now. The Sox offense managed 10 hits, pushing across 5 runs. 2 of those hits were credited to Hanley Ramirez who hit a 2-run home run in the 3rd inning to give Boston a 2-1 lead. Dustin Pedroia also added 2 hits, one of them an RBI single in the 4th which added to the Boston lead. Lastly Xander Bogaerts added 2 more hits, and an RBI. That RBI came in the 9th when Bogaerts hit a groundball to second baseman Ronald Torreyes who made an error and lead to Mookie Betts scoring. Andrew Benintendi pinch hit for Chris Young in the bottom of the 9th and drew a walk to score Pedroia and clinched the win! Drew Pomeranz got the start for the Red Sox, going 6 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 6 hits, while striking out 7. Robby Scott earned the win, striking out one batter in his only inning of work, in the top of the 9th. Jordan Montgomery was on the hill for the Yanks, going 4 and allowing 3 earned runs, on 6 hits while striking out 3. Aroldis Chapman got the blown save and the loss allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits, while walking 2 batters as well. Offensively for the Yankees they hit much better than the Red Sox. Gary Sanchez was 2 for 4 with a 2-run BOMB in the 5th, which gave the Yankees the lead 4-3. Sanchez’s other hit came in the 3rd, driving in Chase Headley on a single to left field. Brett Gardner drove in the other run on his only hit of the day with a single to right to drive in Headley. The Yankees and Red Sox meet at Fenway again tomorrow at 4:05 pm.
