Era of The Super Teams
Now is better timing than ever to question the evolution of super teams in the NBA, with the so called “super team” Golden State Warriors’ victory. Clinching their second NBA Finals title in just three years. Golden State has been in the finals for three straight years against the same opponent, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Yes, the Warriors are a super team and there is no question about it. Many portray their anger with the league for letting such a team exist. These people believe that these super teams are ruining all entertainment and excitement of watching the game. In the NBA today teams are building these super teams by adding these all-stars to their already talented roster.
One thing I deem unfair is that all the criticism is directed towards Golden State, yet other teams are attempting the same. For example, Cleveland Cavaliers brought Kyle Korver to add to their already powerful roster. Players with big salaries are willing to cut their earnings just so their team can bring in another star. Another question of mine is “why are people noticing these teams now?”. Teams like these were around long before now. The rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics in the 1980s is proof of this. Both teams had at least two all-stars and future hall of famers on their squads. The Celtics led by Larry Bird and Kevin McHale and the Lakers led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. That rivalry brought tremendous publicity towards the games and the league in general. The fans loved the rivalry, and it brought excitement to the game. These teams met each other in the Finals many times in the course of just ten years, just like the Cavaliers have with the Warriors in the past three. Yet, people are complaining about the circumstances now. I believe that this new idea of creating super teams is going to make the league better and bring even more publicity and attention to these games. NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, said it himself, “...let’s just create more great teams.” instead of dispersing all the stars.
