Penguins Win in Double Overtime, Move Onto The Stanley Cup Final
The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row as they knocked out the Ottawa Senators by a score of 3-2 in double overtime. The first period of this game was scoreless as Craig Anderson would stop 6 shots and Matt Murray would stop 5. Going into the second nobody had the momentum they wanted, but that changed for the Penguins as they were able to get the first goal as Chris Kunitz would score 9 minutes into the game on a breakaway. This goal would not only be his first of the playoffs, but his first on the night, but the Senators wouldn’t be down for long. Only 24 seconds later Mark Stone would put the puck past Murray’s glove to make it 1-1. That would be the last goal going into the intermission. There would be no goals until the 11 minute mark of the third period as Justin Schultz would score from the blueline on the powerplay to give the Pens the 2-1 lead with 9 minutes left. Then 4 minutes later Ryan Dzingel would put the rebound home after it bounced off the post to tie the game at 2-2. This goal would put game 7 into overtime. The first overtime almost came to an end when a shot from Phil Kessel went above the net, giving the notion that it went in the net for some fans, but we would continue. The first overtime would end with Anderson stopping 8 and Murray stopping 2. Then comes double overtime. 5 minutes and 9 seconds into the overtime Chris Kunitz would get a fead from Crosby and he would blast it home. This is Kunitz's second goal of the night, and second goal of the playoffs. The goalies had the highest stage due to Craig Anderson stopping 39 out of 42 and Matt Murray stopping 27 out of 29. The Penguins have a chance to repeat as Stanley Cup champions as they take on the Nashville Predators.
