Senators Power Through, Win Game 5
The Ottawa took the 3 games to 2 series lead over the New York Rangers as they took game 5 by a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Rangers would however strike first for the 5th time this series. This goal would come as Jesper Fast and Brendan Smith went on a 2 on 1 breakaway and Fast would one-time the puck past Anderson to make it 1-0 4 minutes into the game. The Rangers would not let up as they then scored 1 minute and 6 seconds later as Nick Holden would snipe the puck past Anderson to make it 2-0. Then another minute later Mark Stone would jump on a scramble and he would tip it past Lundqvist to make it 2-1. Then going into the second period the Senators would strike first. Only 8 minutes into the second Mike Hoffman would get a beautiful feed from Clarke MacArthur and Hoffman would blast it past Lundqvist to make it 2-2. Then only 33 seconds later Tom Pyatt would deflect the puck through Henrik’s 5 hole to make it 3-2. Then with only 3 minutes left Michael Grabner would throw the puck on net and Ryan McDonagh would tip the puck past Anderson to tie the game at 3. The third period was mainly a goalie duel until 8 minutes left when Jimmy Vesey would backhand the puck into the net to make it 4-3 in favor of the Rangers. Craig Anderson almost had the puck but his glove would cross the line with the puck in it. This was Jimmy Vesey’s first NHL playoff goal of his career. Then with only 2 minutes left Derick Brassard would dive to the net to bat in a bouncing puck to tie the game up at 4. Then heading into overtime the Rangers almost scored the winning goal but the goal was called off. Then 6 minutes into the overtime Kyle Turris would slide the puck past Lundqvist to win the game in overtime.
