Yankees Sweep Cubs in the Sweetest Fashion, in 18 Innings
The defending champs vs. the “future” of baseball, Cubs vs. Yankees, playing a 3 game set this early in the season? What could you expect coming in, but a sweep by the future, is pretty amazing. Last night the Yanks wrapped up the series with the Cubs, the game took 18 innings.
As we all know already, the Yankees are stacked and ready to go with up and coming players from the farm system, as well as they are not dealing with injury’s. Let’s be honest, nobody expected the Yankees to be playing as well as they are (20-9), but this is the least to come. Superstar Aaron Judge is blowing everyone away, leading the league in homeruns and the team as well as RBI’s and OBP. But it isn’t just Judge, it’s the whole team, out hitting homeruns vs. opponents 48-32. Starlin Castro is among others standing out, coming in clutch in certain scenarios and leading the teams in batting average and hits.
This series has been based mainly on the offensive charge. But last night, was all about the pitching. Lester and Severino (starters) combined for 18 strikeouts combined, the final total for the game, 48. This number breaks the previous high of 43. The game only took 6 hours and 5 minutes, but it was the greatest game we might see all season. The turning point was when in the 8th inning, game tied at four, Hicks reached Hicks reached second after his bunt single and a throwing error by catcher Willson Contreras. Hicks moved up on Ronald Torreyes' sacrifice against Pedro Strop, and then scored on Starlin Castro's fielder's choice. Castro hit the ball to shortstop Addison Russell, who threw home, but not in time to get Hicks.
