Caps Have Scary Start, Win in Overtime
The Toronto Maple Leafs played in their first ever playoff game since the 2012-2013 season which they lost to the Boston Bruins in 7 games. With rookie all-star Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and goaltender Frederick Anderson, the Leafs look to knock out the heavily favored Washington Capitals in round 1. Only 1 minute into the first period Mitch Marner would score his first playoff goal, in his first playoff shift, on his first playoff shot, and he did all this while taking a tumble to the ice. The second and only Leafs goal came around 10 minutes into the first period, as Nazem Kadri would screen Brendan Holtby and he deflected the puck in, the goal would be reviewed for goaltender interference but it was ruled no goalie interference. The Capitals would make sure they would score in the first. Around 13 minutes in the Capitals had a 2 man advantage and Oishe would feed Williams for a wide open goal, 2-1. Then 16 minutes into the second, Justin Williams would jump onto a rebound and bury his second goal of the night. From here to overtime, it was a goalie duel as Holtby and Anderson would make beautiful saves at each end of the ice. Then at 14 minutes remaining in overtime Tom Wilson would put the puck past Anderson’s glove side to win game 1 for the Capitals 3-2.
