Gonzaga, Xavier Meet In Elite Eight
Tonight is the night. Tonight the West Region will play its Elite Eight game! #1 Gonzaga and #11 Xavier meet in San Jose, California tonight to play for a trip to Phoenix for the Final Four! Gonzaga finished its season as the #2 team in the AP Polls, after finishing the season with a 32-1 record with that lone loss coming to BYU at home. The Bulldogs got the #1 seed in the West Region and took on #16 South Dakota State in the Round of 64, where they beat them 66-46 which to me wasn't very impressive only beating a 16 seed by 20 and only scoring 66 points. In the Round of 32 they took on a Northwestern team who had never been in the NCAA Tournament ever. Northwestern came out ready to fight and boy did they fight. The Bulldogs pulled out the win though 79-73, if it wasn't for some questionable calls Northwestern may have been able to pull off the upset. Then on Thursday they met the Mountaineer of West Virginia in San Jose for the Sweet Sixteen. Another close game that Gonzaga pulled off, somehow, someway. Maybe if West Virginia didn't waste so much time off the clock in the end before taking a shot (which ended up being an awful shot by the way) they might have been able to beat them.
Now they face Cinderella team Xavier in the Elite Eight. #11 Xavier was the last team to get into this tournament and started it off with a Round of 64 upset over #6 Maryland where they held Melo Trimble to just 13 points. In the Round of 32 they took on a Florida State team who was supposed to be upset by Florida Gulf Coast, but Xavier took care of that demolishing the Seminoles 91-66! In the Sweet Sixteen the Musketeers took on an Arizona team that had title hopes in mind, but Xavier ended those hopes upsetting the Wildcats 73-71. Now the favorite and the cinderella team go head to head at 6:09 tonight on TBS!
