Ichabod Crane Boys Varsity Basketball 2016-2017 Season Recap
The Ichabod Crane Boys Varsity basketball season ended on Monday, February 27th against #1 Glens Falls 77-55 in the Section 2 Class B Semifinals. The Riders finished the season with an 18-5 record (10-4 in conference) that got them the #4 seed in sectionals, second place in the Liberty Division and third in the Colonial Council. Ichabod had many Seniors on the team and many that will be hard to replace, such as Pete Volkmann and Joey Werner. Werner led all scorers with 336 points (14.6 ppg), and Pete Volkmann was a close second with 324 (14.0 ppg). Ichabod loses seniors Pete Volkmann, Joey Werner, Austin Valliere, Casey Rutkey, Brad Kittle, Bryant Halpin, and Garrett Kilcer. The Riders will return 0 starters, but 6 bench players in Chad Salazar, Christian Pesano, CJ Ferrari, Peyton Mavrides, Rama Culver, and Matt Ragosta.
My 2016-17 Colonial Conference Basketball Awards:
MVP: Davonte Jones, PG, Lansingburgh
Jones led his Knights team in points with 339 (15.4 ppg), and to the Class A Section 2 Championship where they won in OT against Averill Park 64-62.
6th Man of The Year: Matt Ragosta, F, Ichabod Crane
Ragosta provided a spark off the bench for the Riders, scoring 120 points (5.2 ppg).
Underclassmen of The Year: JJ Chestnut, G, Watervliet
Chestnut scored 128 points this year (8.0ppg) with a season high of 16 in a big game at Shaker.
My 2016-17 Ichabod Crane Basketball Awards:
MVP: Peter Volkmann, Senior, Guard
Volkmann was the second leading scorer on Ichabod with 324 points (14.0 ppg). He really helped the team in need especially in the Quarterfinals against Hudson where he scored 29 points. Volkmann will be truly missed on the court next year for the Riders.
Bench Player of the Year: Matt Ragosta, Junior, F
Ragosta scored 120 points for the Riders off the bench this year (5.2 ppg), and will be a key leader on the team next year as a senior. Ragosta will most likely be starting and have to fill the big shoes of Senior Joey Werner.
Most Improved Player: Casey Rutkey, Senior, G/F
Rutkey played on JV his tenth grade year while all his classmates were u on Varsity. I think that year helped him improve tremendously as a basketball player, really taking the role of a leader on. This year as a Senior Rutkey was fifth on the team in scoring with 132 points (5.7 ppg).
What To Expect Next Year:
Next year the Riders will slope downhill a bit after losing 7 seniors. They will have some new additions from the JV team such as Donovan Brown, Jack Baumgartner, and Bill LaBounty and also the possibility of Sophomore Austin Walsh.
Projected Lineup:
G: Peyton Mavrides, Senior
G: Christian Pesano, Junior
F: Matt Ragosta, Senior
F: Chad Salazar, Senior
C: Rama Culver, Sophomore
6: CJ Ferrari, Senior 7: Austin Walsh, Sophomore 8: Donovan Brown, Junior 9: Jack Baumgartner, Junior 10: Bill LaBounty, Junior
