Siena Pushes Past Fairfield, Advances to Semifinals vs Monmouth
Another day, another win for the Siena Saints. The Saints out played the Fairfield Stags on Saturday (3/4/17) night at the Times Union Center, ending Fairfields hopes of winning the MAAC tournament, 78-66. Siena dominated for the majority of the game, behind the solid play of Javion Ogunyemi. Ogunyemi led the Saints with 24 points, one point away from his 2016-17 season high 25 points, which he scored at Quinnipiac back on January 30th of this year. He was 7-11 from the field, and hit a big three that sealed the game for the Saints late in the second half. He also grabbed 9 boards on the night.
Fairfield was led junior guard Tyler Nelson, who put up 25 points on the Saints. He shot just 6-20 from the field, 4-13 from deep, but he made 9-12 shots from the line. He also put together 4 assists and 4 rebounds for the Stags as well.
Siena now advances to play the #1 seeded Monmouth Hawks on Sunday evening. Since entering the MAAC, Monmouth owns a 7-1 record over the Saints, and swept the Saints in the season series, which featured a 20 point blowout, which saw Monmouth star Justin Robinson drop 40 on Siena. Siena has its hands full for the next game, but as the great Jim Valvano once said, survive and advance.
