2017 Section 2 Class B Boys Basketball Sectional Preview

Sectionals kickoff on Friday for Class B Boys Basketball. This year sectionals could get very interesting, there are some intriguing matchups and some very good teams That Could go head to head.

#9 Watervliet @ #8 Schalmont

2/21 @ 7:00pm

This is a very good matchup and I think could be the best game in round 1. Schalmont finished the year 9-8 (9-5 in league play). The Sabres picked up key wins against Ichabod Crane twice, Ravena, Watervliet, and Mohonasen. They are led by senior Troy Moran who averages 13.5 points per game. On the other side Watervliet is a team who got off to a slow start but has turned it around greatly getting wins over Voorheesville, Ravena, Amsterdam, Cohoes, Hudson Falls, Shaker, and Bishop Gibbons. Led by Junior Joey Atkins the Cannoneers could upset the Sabres.

#11 Cohoes @ #6 Broadalbin-Perth

2/21 @ 7:00pm

Another intriguing matchup to watch for is Cohoes @ Broadalbin-Perth. They split the season series where both games were decided by at least 19 points. The Patriots led by Senior Preston Taylor (17.7 ppg) are looking to open up sectionals on a good note, but Marquis Alston and the Tigers won't settle for a first round exit.

#14 Ravena @ #3 Voorheesville

2/21 @ 7:00pm

Voorheesville was a surprise team to me this year finishing 15-4 (9-3 in conference play). Collecting key wins against conference foes Ichabod Crane, La Salle, and Ravena twice. Senior Sean Nolan has led this Blackbirds team scoring 16.7 points per game including a 29 point game against Ravena. Ravena finished the year 9-11 (3-11). There hasn’t been too much positive to talk about the Indians this year except for Sky Rebeor. Rebeor is averaging 18.4 points per contest including 23 vs Middleburgh, 23 vs Gloversville, 27 vs Lansingburgh, 22 vs Ichabod Crane, 21 vs Rondout Valley, 20 vs Watervliet, 24 vs Voorheesville, 25 vs Cohoes, 28 vs Cairo-Durham, and 30 vs Cobleskill-Richmondville.

#10 Catskill @ #7 Hoosick Falls

2/21 @ 7:30pm

Catskill finished the season 3rd in the Patroon Conference with a 10-5 record (13-6 overall). The Cats are led by young star Justice Brantley (20 ppg) who has been lights out as of late with a 43 point game at Chatham, and a 33 point game at Maple Hill. On the Hoosick Falls side of the ball, Falls finished the season 17-3 overall and 16-1 in Wasaren Conference play. Led by Junior Guy Milligan this should be an exciting game that could end in an upset.

#12 Bishop Gibbons @ #5 Hudson

2/21 @ 7:30pm

The defending champion Hudson Bluehawks take on Bishop Gibbons. The Bluehawks are looking to win the section again this year. Hudson has only lost twice this year coming at the hands of Ichabod Crane and La Salle. Their team is very deep with 7 100+ point scorers on the season. They brought up Dayquan Griffin and Willie Jones, 2 guys that led their JV team to an 18-0 season and that could help the ‘hawks down low. Bishop Gibbons finished 2nd in Division I of the Western Athletic Conference this year with an 8-3 Conference record. Led by Zyir Beverly (27 ppg) the Golden Knights will hope to upset the Bluehawks title hopes.

#13 Schuylerville @ #4 Ichabod Crane

2/21 @ 7:00pm

Ichabod Crane enters sectionals with a 16-4 overall record. The Riders started the season smoking hot with an 11-0 record, but after a home loss to Schalmont and two tough road losses to La Salle and Voorheesville the Riders stumbled. They quickly got back up with wins over Coxsackie Athens twice, Watervliet, and Catholic Central before falling at Schalmont again. They finished the season on a high note defeating La Salle at home. As for Schuylerville the Black Horses finished 8-12. Ichabod Crane is looking to make a run at the title but can't look past Schuylerville.

#2 Mekeel Christian

The #2 seed was earned by Mekeel Christian out of the Western Athletic Conference. Finishing the season 18-0 (10-0) Mekeel is looking to go in and do work in sectionals after losing last year. The Lions are led by 300 point scorers Deonte Holder, and Carter Stewart.

#1 Glens Falls

The ultimate favorite is the Glens Falls Indians out of the Foothills Conference. They finished the season 20-0 (14-0) and are led by Sophomore Joe Girard III (719 points) who averages a whopping 35.9 points per game. The Indians will look for revenge after falling in last years title game against Hudson.
