La Salle Hockey wins Delvecchio Cup, Get #1 Seed in Sectionals

Without a doubt it has been a magical season thus far for La Salle hockey. Coming into this season with high hopes, they are making those hopes a reality. Senior Logan Discanio has been a great help, in 2nd in all of Section 2 with 22 goals total. The stats keep piling on for Discanio, 2nd in points for the season. Not to mention he also leads in assists with 31. But it hasn’t just been Discanio, Senior Kevin Mainello is tied for 4th in Section 2 in goals.

La Salle has the options that some teams don’t in the league. They have the ability to turn to 3 consistent goalies, either for placement or rest. Senior Zach Rentz is second in wins in Section 2 with 9, on the other hand Junior Casey Boone has a 5-0 record, and sophomore Kyle Rentz is 2-0 as well. Boone and (Z.) Rentz are both in the top 5 for goals allowed. That is an impressive stat that teams would look to have with one goalie in net.

But do the stats really mean that this team is the way they are, no exactly. This team is led by great senior leadership. Many players are still developing as hockey players and many 4+ year seniors can help with that.

The back line for the Cadets has also been impressive. Led by Sophomores Jack O’ Bryan and Sebatian Geiger leading the team in defensive goals. Having defensive players that are versatile on both ends are the ice are key, and with sectionals approaching the relationship between the two is very important.

Sectionals kick off soon when they await the winner of Wednesday night’s play in game between #9 Guilderland or #9 Niskayuna. La Salle will play the winner of that game on Friday Night the 18th at HVCC, puck drop 7:15. This game will be livestreamed on upstatesportszone.com so be sure to tune in!
