Siena Catches Second Straight Loss at Home by Jake Martino and Austin Walsh
Final- Siena 73, Canisius 80
Albany NY- The atmosphere was great tonight at the Times Union Center. Season high in attendance tonight hitting a total of 7,209. Siena failed to capitalize over Canisus, that is their second home loss in row.
Slow start from the Saints in the first half only shooting 44.4 % from the field. Canisius on the other hand caught fire at the right time. Shooting 56.3 % in the first half, they knew it would be a for sure guaranteed win. Early on Canisius led by 18 with Phil Valeniti having 15pts. In the first half the score was tied twice and the lead changed one time.
Siena although started catching some heat in the second half going on an 8-0. Early on in the second half, Jimmy Patsos got a technical for arguing many calls. Later on he would end up getting another technical, sending him back to the locker room to watch the game on TV. For Siena, they delt with continuous none call throughout the game.
Foul trouble was huge, Marquis Wright played 40 minutes tonight for the Saints. Siena had trouble from 3 throughout shooting 0-8 and again with free throws 17-25 a whopping 68%. Marquis Wright added after the game that “Coach wants us to go outside, but when we have the opportunity to take the 3’s we take them” “Me personally I could not get my mojo going and that played a big role in the loss tonight”.
“47-32” was Siena HC Jimmy Patsos main thing that he discussed post game. He was also proud that Marquis and the Interim coach took big leadership roles when he wasn’t out on the floor. He also had a problem with the assistant coach from Canisius saying that “He was yelling at me from the other side of the bench.” “When I have ever been an assistant coach or coach for that matter I had never yelled anything to the other bench”.
Lavon Long had a decent game for the Saints totaling 16. Long added after the game that “It made it hard to get to the rim in the final stretch”, “We forced shots we didn’t need and that costed us the victory in the end. Long missed 2 key free throws down the stretch that would have cut the lead to 2. In my time with Long I asked how he can make others play the way he does and he added “We just have to get everyone else involved”.
Siena has struggled the past few games at home dropping a blowout to Iona and especially tonight against a good team in Canisius. Siena is back in action against Iona on the 7th. For continued coverage of Siena, stay with Upstate Sports Zone… @upstate_sports
