Kevin Huerter Currently an X Factor for the Maryland. Here's why by Jake Martino
One of Upstate NY’s greatest basketball products yet. Well, other than Jimmer and Joe Girard is Shen Grad Kevin Huerter.
Huerter is currently playing college basketball at the University of Maryland, his dream school. Maryland is always a threat in the B1G Ten and they added an all-around beast in Huerter.
The Terps are currently sitting at 15-2 and second in the B1G Ten, and currently my most underrated team in college basketball. Not ranked in the AP poll, but ranked in the Upstate Sports Zone Poll, Maryland will make noise. Especially with Freshman Kevin Huerter on their side.
The key to their success? Well many people are saying it is Huerter playing his finest basketball. I couldn’t agree more. He is the kind of player you want on your team. He spends countless hours in the gym, cares about the fans and of course his family. Family is very important being a student-athlete. Knowing that you are a part of on just makes it even better.
Huerter is only averaging 8.6 PPG, but during the stretch of last game he has scored 10+. The biggest thing about Huerter currently is that he is hitting clutch shots, or making big defensive spots when Maryland needs them. It also helps playing with a great guard in Melo Tremble. What Huerter has to do is keep playing the way he is, but at the same time, improve on his play on the offensive side of the ball earlier in the game. Making an early presence is huge in college basketball. We have seen it before time and time again that when a player is hot he stay’s hot. Other than that, Huerter is balling it up in Maryland.
Conference play has just opened in the B1G Ten and Maryland already has some key wins in Michigan, Indiana but a bad loss in Nebraska when Huerter dropped 26. The Terps are back in action Saturday January 14th against Illinois.
