USA Wins Close Game, Take Gold in World Juniors By Caden Balint
The World Juniors hockey tournament just ended yesterday in major fashion. USA took the gold home in a shootout thanks to Troy Terry getting the game winning goal in round 4 of the shootout over Canada. The game started off with Canada scoring 2 goals in the first period to take the 2-0 lead over the U.S. Then the United States came out of their locker room fighting. They scored 2 to tie the game going into the 2nd intermission. Then coming into the 3rd period it was back and forth game. It started off with Canada scoring 2 more goals to take the lead 4-2, but America did not give up. Later in the period, USA was able to score 2 more goals and tie the game at 4-4. Due to these 2 goals from Colin White and Kieffer Bellows, this game would go to overtime. Then Canada came out strong in the overtime period thanks to a “too many men” penalty, but the USA goaltender, Tyler Parsons, stood on his head. Thanks to Parsons USA and Canada would go to a shootout. This shootout would go scoreless for 3 rounds, then came in Troy Terry. He would score the goal on the five hole through Canadian goalie Carter Hart. Then Tyler Parsons would make the save on Canada’s last shooter to win the United States gold in the World Juniors. Tyler Parsons would make 46 saves on 50 shots, as well as stopping all 5 shots in the shootout. Canada's netminder Carter Hart, would make 32 saves on 36 shots, as well as stopping 4-5 shots in the shootout. The Americans that scored were Charlie McAvoy, Kieffer Bellows (who would score 2 goals) and Colin White. The goal scorers for Canada were Thomas Chabot, Jeremy Lauzon, Nicolas Roy, and Mathieu Joseph. This would be the USA’s first World Junior gold since 2013.
