5 Cities Who Have the Potential to Own an MLS Expansion Team by Jake Martino

In the MLS, the goal is 28 teams. With 2 coming in the 2017 season in Minnesota and Atlanta, who can we expect next? The MLS is supposed to announce 2 more teams mid-2017 and 2 more sometime after that. Here are my thoughts on who should receive an MLS Team.

1. Sacramento, California

The Kings just completed the all new Golden1Center in downtown Sacramento. Why not add an MLS stadium? The fan base is there and many people are making petitions to get a team there. Crazy.

2. St. Petersburg, Florida

Only a one team city in the Tampa Bay Rays, and a population of at least 300,000 people I think it is time to add a MLS Team in St. Petersburg. Right now the MLS has the easiest process to own an expansion team so I think they should take advantage. The fact of the matter is that

it isn’t just the easiest process, but the fans are there and are ready for MLS.

3. Detroit, Michigan

So far Detroit has the most potential to receive an MLS team. With Pistons in line to get a stadium in downtown Detroit, the money is all there. But should they be approved? Haven’t seen much

4. San Antonio, Texas

With the potential of the San Antonio Spurs buying out the current team in there it would give them good capital and a HUGE chance of owning an MLS team.

5. Raleigh, NC

Ah yes, Raleigh the future home of me. It is a great spot in Raleigh with 4-5 surrounding colleges and a huge fan base for soccer. That would be the place to be in the city.
