Cubs Win World Series For First Time In 108 Years In Thrilling Game 7 by Camdyn Ames
It was one for the ages. Game 7 of the 2016 World Series was one unforgettable game from start to finish. In the top of the first the Chicago Cubs center fielder Dexter Fowler led off with a home run to go ahead 1-0. In the 3rd the Cleveland Indians tied it at 1-1 with a Carlos Santana RBI single. The Cubs struck back in the 4th scoring 2 runs on an Addison Russell sacrifice fly, and a Wilson Contreras double to make it 3-1, but they didn't stop there Javier Baez jacked a solo home run to lead off the 5th inning and later Anthony Rizzo singled in Kris Bryant. In the bottom half of the 5th with runners on second and third, and Jon Lester on the mound, Lester threw a wild pitch allowing both Santana and Jason Kipinis to score making it 6-4 Chicago. In the 6th inning 39 year old David Ross hit a home run to become the oldest player ever to hit a home run in game 7 of the World Series. In the bottom of the 8th inning Brandon Guyer stepped to the plate and smacked a double to score Jose Ramirez bringing the game to 2 runs. The very next batter, Rajai Davis pounded a line drive 2-run home run to tie the game. The game was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth when Aroldis Chapman snuck out of the inning ending it with a fly out to Jason Heyward. After a 17 minute rain delay the game picked back up in the 10th inning when Ben Zobrist doubled to score Albert Almora who pinch ran for Kyle Schwarber. Then Miguel Montero singled and Rizzo scored. Davis singled in Guyer in the 10th but that's all Cleveland could muster when Michael Martinez grounded out to Bryant for the final out. Aroldis Chapman received the win, Brian Shaw took the loss, and Mike Montgomery got the save. Ben Zobrist earned World Series MVP honors with his 1 for 5 1 run, 1 RBI performance. This was the Cubs first World Series win in 108 years and boy was it a special one!
