NHL Opening Week Recap by Jared McCabe
The NHL Regular Season started last Wednesday and it was an exciting first week.
Wednesday, October 12
Senators 5 – Maple Leafs 4 Final/OT
Auston Matthews made his NHL debut with four goals.
Blues 5 – Blackhawks 2 Final
Vladimir Tarasenko had a big night scoring two goals for the Blues.
Oilers 7 – Flames 4 Final
The Oilers debuted in their new Rogers Centre. The bright young star in the game Connor McDavid had a nice night with a two goals and one coming from a penalty shot.
Sharks 2 – Kings 1 Final
Sharks were led by Logan Couture first period goal and Brent Burns third period goal.
Thursday, October 13
Bruins 6 – Bluejackets 3 Final
Brad Marchand and David Pasternak led the way for the Bruins with each having 3 goals. Marchand had a three-point night.
Lighting 6 – Redwings 4 Final
Tampa bays offense was clicking on all cylinders leading to six goals.
Rangers 5 – Islanders 3 Final
Rangers got a boost by Kris Kreider goal in the third period that helped the Rangers win.
Canadians 4 – Sabres 1 Final
Shea Weber made his regular season debut for the Canadians and he helped the Canadians win a road game in Buffalo.
Panthers 2 – Devils 1 Final/OT
Taylor Halls debut with the Devils but they fell short to the Panthers in overtime from Alexander Barkov game winning goal in overtime.
Jets 5 – Hurricanes 4 Final/OT
Jets started the season off well with a win at home with a game-wining goal from Mark Scheifele in overtime.
Blues 3 – Wild 2 Final
Blues got their second win of the season and first win at home this season.
Penguins 3 – Capitals 2 Final/SO
Pittsburgh raised their Stanley Cup Banner and won from a Phil Kessel shootout goal without Sidney Crosby playing. (Concussion)
Stars 4 – Ducks 2 Final
Stars won their first game of the season at home with an all around game.
Friday, October 14
Predators 3 – Blackhawks 2 Final
PK Subban made his Nashville debut and he didn’t disappoint. He had his first Predators goal in the first period that tied the score at one.
Oilers 5 – Flames 3 Final
Connor McDavid had another great night with a goal that is already his third of the year.
Flyers 4 – Kings 2 Final
The story of this game was the Kings were without their star goalie in Jonathon Quick.
Saturday, October 15
Maple Leafs 4 – Bruins 1 Final
Bruins didn’t show up to play and the Maple Leafs took advantage of that. David Pasternak had another goal for the Bruins
Lighting 3 – Devils 2 Final
Lighting offense played great again and Stevin Stamkos got his first goal of the season.
Wild 4 – Jets 3 Final
Very close game went back and forth. Wild just edge the Jets and win by one.
Capitals 2 – Islanders 1 Final
Washington’s offense was Daniel Winnik. He led the way with Washington’s only two goals.
Senators 4 – Canadians 3 Final/SO
Back and forth game and the Senators prevail in the shootout.
Panthers 4 – Redwings 1 Final
Panthers overall out played the Redwings in all aspects of the game.
Penguins 3 – Ducks 2 Final
Close game and Phil Kessel goal in the second period held up to be the game winner.
Sharks 3 – Blue Jackets 2 Final
Bluejackets played well but fell short in the end.
Blues 3 – Rangers 2 Final
Vladimir Tarasenko had another goal, his third of the year and led the Blues to the victory.
Blackhawks 5 – Predators 3 Final
Blackhawks got revenge on the Predators and won a close game over the Predators.
Coyotes 4 – Flyers 3 Final/OT
Fun exciting game and Oliver Ekman- Larsson had the game winner for the Coyotes.
Avalanche 6 – Stars 5 Final
The Stars got scoring from Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn but they fell short to the Avalanche.
Canucks 2 – Flames 1 Final/ SO
Close game that went to the shootout and Brandon Sutter won the game for the Canucks in the shootout.
Sunday, October 16
Islanders 3 – Ducks 2 Final/OT
Exciting back and forth game that went to overtime and Josh Bailey had the exciting game winner for the Islanders in the Barclays Center.
Sabres 6 – Oilers 2 Final
High scoring game for Buffalo and Kyle Okposo had his first Sabres goal, while Ryan O’Reilly had two for Buffalo.
Canucks 4 – Hurricanes 3 Final/OT
The highlight of this game was Brandon Sutter had another game winning goal for the Canucks.
